Vice President of Architecture and design
Indexed description
Our client a leading private regional homebuilder in the Southwest with award winning communities and designs.
The Role
We are seeking a hands-on Vice President of Architecture & Design to lead our product development across residential and select non-residential sectors. This isn't a "sit behind the desk" role; you will be the primary visionary and technical lead, personally driving the design aesthetic while ensuring every project is buildable, profitable, and market-right. You’ll oversee everything from initial land planning concepts to the final interior specifications for our regional portfolio.
Core Responsibilities
- Design Leadership: Lead the creation and refinement of residential product lines (SFD, Townhomes) and non-residential projects (amenity centers, mixed-use, or light commercial).
- Hands-on Production: Roll up your sleeves to sketch concepts, review CAD details, and troubleshoot architectural plans to optimize for cost and constructability.
- Land Integration: Partner with the Land Development team to create innovative site layouts that maximize yield while maintaining high design standards.
- Value Engineering: Constant refinement of plans to reduce "sticks and bricks" costs without sacrificing the brand’s architectural integrity.
- Vendor Management: Select and manage external consultants, architects, and interior designers, ensuring they meet tight deadlines and budget constraints.
- Trend Spotting: Conduct regular market research to ensure our floor plans and elevations stay ahead of regional buyer preferences.
Qualifications
- Experience: 15+ years in residential architecture, specifically with a regional or national homebuilder or similar experience with an architectural firm where some of your clients are homebuilders.
- Versatility: Proven track record in residential design with additional experience in non-residential or light commercial development.
- Technical Chops: Proficiency in Revit/AutoCAD and a deep understanding of regional building codes and wood-frame construction.
- Business Acumen: You understand that great design must meet a margin; you are as comfortable with a spreadsheet as you are with a floor plan.
- Education: Professional degree in Architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch). RA or AIA license preferred but not required if experience is extensive.
Why Join Us?
