Head of Backend Engineering

Location: Berlin (Hybrid)

Salary: Up to €120,000 + Benefits

We’re working with a Berlin-based consumer entertainment platform that has become one of the leading products in its space across Europe. Following continued growth, they’re now hiring a Head of Backend Engineering to lead backend strategy, architecture, and team growth while remaining highly hands-on technically.

This is a leadership role for someone who still loves engineering. You’ll own backend direction across a modern, high-scale platform while helping build a strong, product-focused engineering culture.

They are especially interested in profiles with:

• Founding Engineer or startup leadership experience
• Previous experience scaling engineering teams from early stages
• Strong product mindset and entrepreneurial mentality
• Builders who have launched products or meaningful side projects

Responsibilities

• Own backend architecture and technical direction
• Lead and mentor a growing backend engineering team
• Stay close to the codebase through design, reviews, and implementation
• Drive scalability, reliability, and platform performance
• Collaborate with Product and senior leadership on roadmap planning
• Improve engineering standards, delivery processes, and system design practices

The stack is flexible, but strong experience in several areas is expected:

• Golang preferred OR Python, Node.js
• Distributed systems & API architecture
• GCP and cloud infrastructure
• Microservices architecture
• SQL / NoSQL databases
• CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
• Observability and production monitoring
