Indexed description

Manufacturing advanced electronics requires understanding millions of signals generated across complex assembly processes. Instrumental builds systems that capture and analyze those signals — images, test results, and process data — enabling engineers to discover failures, identify root causes, and deploy production controls that improve yield and product maturity. Leading companies such as NVIDIA, Cisco, and Meta rely on Instrumental to accelerate new product development and scale manufacturing across global factories. Instrumental has become mission-critical for manufacturers building and scaling the next generation of AI infrastructure hardware.

As a DevOps/Integration Engineer in our Shenzhen office, you will be part of the DevOps/SRE China team to ensure our SaaS platform (on AWS) operates reliably and efficiently, and also be responsible for integrations between our platform and customers’ factory systems in APAC by working closely with Instrumental’s customer facing teams (TPM, CSM/CSE, Solution Architects) and factory IT/Engineering teams.

This role is in-person in our Shenzhen office, with occasional travel in Asia for mission-critical deployments.

How Our Solution Works (Context)

Deployment: Our solution consists of two key pieces:

  • The cloud - All the data and intelligence is on a SaaS platform built on AWS. Data processing, analytics, and machine learning are performed on the cloud.
  • The edge (stations) - Stations built by Instrumental with hardware fixtures and software are installed on the customers’ factory floor. Stations are connected to Instrumental’s cloud platform. Stations inspect units as they move along the assembly line using AI/ML models trained on the cloud to detect and alert for defects in real time.

Integration: Our solution integrates with customers’ factory management software (MES) and other software to ensure we are a critical part of the factory workflow:

  • Data input: Metadata about the units and parts are pulled from an MES into stations to aid in real-time inspection and then uploaded to the cloud for tracking and processing. Other manufacturing data (inventory, test, etc) are uploaded to the cloud by customers and fed into our processing pipeline.
  • Data output: Our stations update the MES with inspection outputs in real time to enable MES interventions and actions.

Our stations are the point of contact between Instrumental's cloud and customers’ factory operations.

Responsibilities

DevOps/SRE:

  • Along with fellow DevOps/SRE engineers in US and China you’ll own the performance, scalability, and reliability of Instrumental’s production SaaS platform.
  • Design, build, and evolve our cloud infrastructure with a strong bias for automation.
  • Improve observability, alerting, and incident response to enable fast detection and resolution.
  • Make tradeoffs quickly and pragmatically to keep systems running while the company scales.
  • Partner closely with application engineers, ML engineers, and product teams to raise the reliability bar across the org.

Integration

  • MES integration - Design, implement, and maintain integrations for customer factories’ MES systems with interactions include routing validation, part-lookup queries, and inspection result uploads.
  • Factory data ingestion - Parse, validate, and transform customer factory data (JSON, CSV, XML, logs) for ingestion into AWS S3 and Instrumental’s API.
  • Customer-facing technical collaboration - Support TPMs during customer pilots, bring-ups, and integration validation cycles. Serve as a technical counterpart for customer MES, IT, and engineering teams.

This role is within the China DevOps/SRE team. When there is a seasonal integration project this person would commit 100% to the integration project till completion.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of DevOps or SRE experience deploying and operating commercial SaaS platforms on public cloud infrastructure, AWS preferred.
  • Expert knowledge with Linux, shell, containerization, IaC (terraform preferred), monitoring, logging, and APM tools.
  • Experience with AI tools/processes into development and operation workflows.
  • Proficiency in Python programming language.
  • Experience with system integration using REST APIs. Understanding authentication flow, control flow and data flow.
  • Professional working proficiencies in both Mandarin and English. With English, we prioritize reading/writing ability far more than conversational skills!
  • Able to collaborate across time zones with the US teams.

At Instrumental, protecting company and customer information is a shared responsibility. All employees are expected to comply with company security and privacy policies and promptly report suspected security incidents or policy violations.
