Software Engineer – API Development (Financial Services)

Location: New York, NY – Midtown Manhattan (Hybrid, 1 day/week onsite)

Client: Financial Services

Status: 6 month contract, with the potential to be extended or hired full time

Salary range: $125 000 - $140 000

Job Purpose

The Software Engineer – API Development is responsible for building and supporting RESTful APIs within a serverless AWS environment. This role focuses on delivering secure, reliable backend services that power internal and external applications across a financial services organization. The engineer will work from well‑defined requirements while contributing to high‑quality, maintainable code and operational stability.

Job Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain RESTful APIs using Python
• Build and support AWS Lambda–based serverless applications
• Implement API endpoints following established architecture and design standards
• Integrate APIs with relational databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL)
• Implement authentication and authorization using Okta, JWT, and approved security patterns
• Write clean, maintainable, and testable code with appropriate unit test coverage
• Assist in troubleshooting, debugging, and resolving production issues
• Participate in code reviews and incorporate feedback from senior engineers
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to clarify requirements and deliver solutions
• Participate in agile ceremonies and provide accurate task updates
• Contribute to documentation, technical specifications, and knowledge sharing
• Perform additional engineering duties as needed

Job Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field preferred
• 3–5 years of professional software development experience
• 2+ years of hands‑on Python development
• Experience building RESTful APIs
• Experience writing automated unit tests
• Experience with AWS Lambda and serverless architectures
• Experience working with relational databases and writing SQL
• Understanding of API authentication concepts (JWT, OAuth, etc.)
• Experience with Git or similar version control systems
• Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and pipelines
• Preferred: FastAPI experience
• Preferred: AWS API Gateway experience
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
• Effective communication and ability to collaborate within a team environment
