## The stack
Our backend is a Python/FastAPI monolith that still holds most of the core business logic, alongside a growing set of Node.js/TypeScript microservices handling specific domains. Services communicate over Kafka, we cache in Redis/Valkey, and Postgres is the source of truth.
## What you'll actually be doing
Most of your time will go to building new services, extracting chunks of the monolith into their own homes, and designing the event-driven flows that tie it all together. Some weeks you'll be heads-down shipping a feature end-to-end; others you'll be untangling something in the monolith nobody has touched in a year.
Concretely:
- Designing and building backend services in Python and TypeScript
- Breaking parts of the monolith out into standalone microservices
- Designing Kafka event flows for new features and data pipelines
- Working with Postgres at a level beyond "SELECT * FROM" — schema design, indexes, query tuning
- Reviewing code, weighing in on architecture, and being on-call for what you own
- Desigin real-time data pipelines and event-driven flows
## What we're looking for
You should be comfortable writing production code in **both Python and TypeScript/Node.js** - we use them both daily and you'll touch both. Beyond that, the things that matter:
- A few years of real backend experience shipping to production
- Comfort with event-driven architectures and message queues - Kafka at the core, but RabbitMQ, SQS, NATS, or similar translate fine
- Strong Postgres skills - you know when to reach for an index and when to rewrite the query instead
- You've worked inside a service-oriented codebase before and have opinions about how it should be done
- You can own projects end-to-end without someone holding your hand
Nice to have, not required:
- Fintech, trading, or payments background
- Real-time, low-latency, or WebSocket experience
- Infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, AWS)
The codebase is a mix, some of it is clean, some of it has TODOs older than we'd like to admit, and the monolith still owns more than it should. If the idea of carving that up sounds like a fun problem, you'll fit in well.
