Software Development Engineer

As a Lead Engineer, you will anchor a backend-focused squad, driving the technical evolution of high-performance services and mobile integrations. You will be at the heart of a major digital transformation, leveraging Java, AWS, and modern architectural patterns to build secure, scalable financial products that impact millions of users across the UK.

The Role

• Lead a cross-functional squad in the end-to-end delivery of complex microservices and backend systems supporting critical business outcomes.
• Take full ownership of technical design, implementation, and operational excellence for high-traffic API services using Java and RESTful architectures.
• Provide technical mentorship and drive engineering enablement by establishing sustainable best practices, tools, and shared frameworks across the engineering community.
• Collaborate closely with Architects and Product Owners to translate long-term vision into scalable software solutions that operate at massive scale.
• Champion technical innovation and inner-sourcing to reduce waste and maximize efficiency within your technical domain.

• Strong technical leadership experience, with a proven track record of guiding squads through complex migrations or greenfield builds.
• Exceptional programming expertise in Java and modern OO languages, with deep knowledge of SOLID principles, SOA, and REST API design.
• Extensive experience with the AWS ecosystem and a strong understanding of cloud-native development and distributed systems.
• Proven ability to design and implement secure, high-concurrency architectures that perform reliably at global scale.
• A commitment to high-quality engineering practices including Test-Driven Development (TDD), Behavior-Driven Development (BDD), and Pair Programming.
