The API Enablement Product Manager will drive the vision, strategy, and execution for API-based infrastructure services that empower development teams with secure, automated, and scalable capabilities
Additional Information
The base salary for this position will vary based on geography and other factors. In accordance with law, the base salary for this role if filled within Charlotte, NC is $110K- 115k/year & benefits (see below).
The Role
Responsibilities:
1. Define and own the product roadmap along with the product backlog for API Enablement across compute, storage, network, and database and middleware APIs.
2. Partner with engineering, architecture, and security teams to design and deliver APIs that meet enterprise standards for reliability, scalability, and compliance.
3. Establish clear API consumption models, documentation, and developer experience guidelines.
4. Prioritize features based on business value, technical feasibility, and customer needs.
5. Drive adoption through stakeholder engagement.
6. Monitor API performance, usage metrics, and feedback to continuously improve the product.
7. Ensure alignment with enterprise architecture principles and regulatory requirements.
The Requirements
- Experience in product management (platform/infrastructure/API products in large enterprises); leading cross-functional delivery at scale.
- Roadmap & Prioritization: Demonstrated ability to define multi-quarter roadmaps, OKRs, and prioritize using outcome-driven frameworks (e.g., RICE, WSJF).
- Customer Discovery & UX for Devs: Skilled in interviewing developer and SRE personas, mapping journeys, and shaping API/portal experiences (docs, SDKs, quickstarts).
- Lifecycle Ownership: Full ownership of API lifecycle—discovery, design, versioning, deprecation, and sunsetting—with backward compatibility strategy.
- Domains: Strong understanding of compute, storage, networking, identity, and secrets management across on-prem and cloud.
- Cloud Platforms: Hands-on familiarity with AWS, Azure, GCP core services (IAM, VPC/VNet, EC2/VMs, Load Balancers, Key Vault/KMS).
- Container/Platform: Knowledge of Kubernetes, OpenShift, Ingress, and internal developer platforms (IDP).
- Automation & IaC: Experience with Terraform and Ansible
- Networking & Edge: API gateways, reverse proxies, DNS, certificates, routing, private endpoints, egress controls, and zero-trust patterns.
- API Design: Proficiency with REST, event-driven APIs, GraphQL, OpenAPI/Swagger, and contract-first design; clear standards for idempotency, pagination, error codes.
- Gateway & Management: Experience with platforms like Azure API Management, Kong, Apigee, AWS API Gateway, NGINX, or WSO2—including rate limiting, authN/Z, caching, monetization/internal chargeback.
- Security: Deep familiarity with OAuth2/OIDC, mTLS, JWT, Scopes/Claims, and secrets rotation; strong understanding of least privilege and segmentation models.
- Developer Experience: API portals, documentation quality, SDK strategy, versioning discipline, postman collections, service catalogs (Backstage), and golden paths.
