Data Engineer

The AI and Innovation department delivers robust, scalable, and secure AI solutions across bank’s global platforms, acting as a business-facing service provider dedicated to advanced technology, operational excellence, and innovation. This group supports the bank’s extensive footprint in Asia, the Americas, and other regions.

AI and Innovation department is responsible for maintaining a comprehensive catalogue of AI products and services. In addition, the function is managing the portfolio of end user managed applications (EUMA) platforms ensuring these applications—created and maintained directly by business units—are governed with proper oversight, operational resilience, and alignment to technology and risk management frameworks. This includes supporting innovation at the user level while balancing regulatory obligations and operational continuity.

Alongside operational responsibilities, the department drives innovation, modernisation, and strategic transformation within the AI landscape, ensuring the adoption of cuttingedge technologies and compliance with global control and regulatory frameworks.

Job Purpose:

  • The Data Engineer role is responsible for designing, building, and operating data pipelines and data access layers that prepare, clean, and serve data for analytics, AI, and automation.
  • The role is accountable for ensuring data is ready for use — meaning it is reliable, well-structured, discoverable, and protected by appropriate access controls — so that AI and analytics solutions can be delivered safely and at scale.

What you’ll be doing

Data Engineering

  • Build scalable data pipelines and data assets to support analytics, AI, and automation.
  • Implement data models, structures, and transformations that ensure consistency and reusability.
  • Apply established enterprise patterns for data ingestion, storage, processing, and serving, including medallion/Lakehouse layering (bronze/silver/gold) and standardised APIs defined by Architecture.
  • Engineer solutions for performance, resilience, observability, and cost-efficiency.

Data Pipelines & Operations

  • Develop and operate end-to-end pipelines across ingestion, validation, transformation, enrichment, and serving.
  • Ensure data quality, completeness, and timeliness through automated checks and reconciliation.
  • Implement orchestration, scheduling, monitoring, alerting, and recovery mechanisms.
  • Troubleshoot issues and continually improve operational stability and performance.

AI & Analytics

  • Integrate with enterprise capabilities for data access patterns required for AI, including search, indexing, metadata enrichment, embeddings, and vector-based retrieval.
  • Work closely with AI Engineers to ensure data readiness for training, inference, evaluation, and monitoring.

Data Access, Security & Controls

  • Embed secure data access mechanisms and fine-grained controls directly into data pipelines and data products.
  • Implement lineage, auditability, provenance, and privacy controls consistent with regulatory and internal standards.
  • Collaborate with Cybersecurity, Tech Risk, and Data Governance to ensure compliance across the data lifecycle.

Collaboration & Delivery

  • Work with Architecture to align solutions with enterprise reference architectures and standards.
  • Collaborate with data owners, SMEs, AI engineers, and delivery teams to turn requirements into engineered solutions.
  • Contribute to the evolution of data engineering standards, patterns, and best practices.
  • Operate within a engineering function supporting multiple business domains and AI initiatives.

What you’ll need to be successful

We’re looking for the following skills and experience. If you don’t have all of these but think you could be a good fit for the role, get in touch.

  • Strong experience designing, building, and operating production-grade data pipelines and data assets in enterprise environments.
  • Solid understanding of data modelling, schema design, and transformation patterns for both analytical and operational workloads.
  • Knowledge of Lakehouse patterns, medallion concepts, metadata practices, and scalable data processing including experience working with structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data across multiple source systems.
  • Experience with Microsoft technology stack (e.g., Azure-based data and AI services, Microsoft Fabric ecosystem, enterprise Microsoft tooling).
  • Practical knowledge of data quality management, including validation, reconciliation, error handling, and remediation.
  • Ability to engineer end-to-end data solutions, covering ingestion, storage, processing, and serving layers and aligning solutions with enterprise architecture standards and cloud platforms.
  • Strong understanding of data access controls, including role-based and fine-grained access models, embedded directly into data solutions.
  • Knowledge of data lineage, provenance, auditability, security, and privacy controls, and how to implement them in practice in line with regulatory expectations.
  • Experience enabling data assets for analytics and AI use cases, including retrieval, search, indexing, and embedding pipelines.
  • Proven experience delivering data solutions in complex, cross-functional enterprise environments, balancing delivery speed with resilience, control, and long-term maintainability.
