About The Position
The General Accountant plays a vital role in assisting Finance management in implementing and monitoring an appropriate system of accounting and financial controls that involve procedures for authorization and approval, as well as proper documentation and the physical security of assets. The incumbent supports all accounting cyclical processes with a particular focus on all Transitional Aged Youth-Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (TAY-MCCSS) reporting. Some examples include but are not limited to Audits, Fiscal End, Month End, and Funder reporting. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring accurate, timely reconciliations of the General Ledger and Balance Sheet accounts for Cota.
Primary Responsibilities
Financial Analysis, Consolidated Reporting and Monthly Internal Reporting:
- Prepare periodic forecasting for MCCSS programs
- Assist in the monthly preparation of internal financial statements
- Assist in the preparation of Funder reports as assigned
- Prepare ad hoc analytical review schedules tailored to the stakeholder’s requirements pertaining to areas such as cost, revenue, contracts, tax etc.
- Analyze reporting requests, fully defined user needs and optimal method of production.
- Assist with variances and other reports as requested
- Reconcile the TAY master tracker to the GL on a monthly basis
- Oversee payable cycle for the MCCSS-TAY program
- Reconcile various balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis
- Identify issues from the reconciliation process and follow them up with related staff.
- Support the Month and Fiscal end closing procedures and in the production of the financial reporting package preparation
- Prepare/oversee client/OPR reconciliations as required
- Identify areas for increased efficiency; assist with efficient month end closing
- Other duties as assigned by the Finance and Management Team.
- Maintain confidentiality of records at all times
- Work with Finance and Management team to implement new policies and procedures and implement best practice for financial analysis, tracking and reporting results
- Assist in the preparation of a complete set of audit working papers for the annual financial audit
- Respond to inquiries related to finance area from program staff
- Maintain understanding of tutorial resources available for all financial reporting software used by Cota and be current on all modules and applications. Provide report and training to other staff as needed
- Work cooperatively and constructively with other members of the organization and with external stakeholder
- Knowledge of Great Plains, is an asset
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize and respond to urgent situations while consistently meeting competing deadlines
- Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Proficiency with other Microsoft software (Word, SharePoint, TEAMS, Power point)
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Accounting and Finance
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in finance role(s) such as accounting general ledger, payroll, accounts payable
- Experience in working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
