JOB TITLE: General Ledger Manager

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

SCHEDULE: M-F, 40 hrs./week

LOCATION: Kansas City, MO (Hybrid Work Environment)

REPORTS TO: Controller



POSITION SUMMARY:

The Accounting Manager will oversee the daily operations of and participate in all aspects of the general accounting functions while ensuring accurate and timely monthly financial reporting in accordance with Firm policies and procedures. The Manager is responsible for performing monthly close activities such as the review of account reconciliations, journal entries and general ledger trends. The Manager will oversee the accounting staff and report to the Controller. This is a highly visible role within the Finance department and across the Firm.


Under general direction, the Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the Firm’s general accounting operations, including general ledger integrity, month-end close, financial reporting, and balance sheet management. This role ensures accurate, timely financial results in accordance with Firm policies, internal controls, and applicable accounting standards.


The Manager leads a team of accounting professionals, drives consistency and accountability in close and reporting processes, and partners closely with the Controller and Finance leadership. This role also collaborates cross-functionally to support process improvements, system enhancements, and operational alignment across the Firm.



COMPENSATION: At Spencer Fane, we carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining compensation, including but not limited to location, skillset, experience, training, licenses, certifications and other business or organizational needs. Compensation will be determined based on the above factors along with the requirements of the position. We expect the starting salary for this position to be between $127,500 - $148,500.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Oversee preparation and review of monthly financial statements and reporting packages, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with Firm policies and GAAP.
  • Perform financial analysis (variance, trends, key drivers) and communicate insights to Finance leadership.
  • Maintain general ledger integrity, ensuring transactions are properly recorded, supported, and aligned with reporting requirements.


Month-End Close & Balance Sheet Management

  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate completion of all close activities.
  • Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Oversee balance sheet account reconciliations and proactively resolve discrepancies and variances.


Accounting Operations & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies, internal controls, and regulatory requirements; support audit readiness and execution.
  • Oversee audits and system/data integrity reviews across payroll, budgeting, and accounting processes.
  • Maintain and strengthen control environments to ensure reliability of financial reporting.


Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop accounting staff, driving performance, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Oversee team operations, including work allocation, performance management, and quality review of deliverables.
  • Partner with HR on hiring, onboarding, and performance-related activities.


Cross-Functional Partnership & Project Support

  • Collaborate with Finance, HR, IT, and business partners on accounting initiatives, system implementations, and process alignment.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for accounting-related inquiries and issue resolution.
  • Support ad hoc analysis, reporting, and special projects for Finance leadership.


Process Improvement & Systems Optimization

  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of accounting operations.
  • Standardize workflows and maintain documentation of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Partner with IT and Finance teams to support system enhancements and optimize financial tools.



QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • Minimum of 7+ years of general ledger accounting experience (public or private).
  • Prior supervisory experience of 3+ years preferred.


Technical Expertise:

  • Demonstrated ability to apply general ledger accounting concepts and interpret financial data in alignment with GAAP and internal controls.
  • Strong proficiency in financial systems and reporting tools, with advanced Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, lookups) to analyze and support financial reporting.


Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills:

  • Advanced analytical skills with demonstrated ability to evaluate financial data, identify variances, and determine root causes to support decision-making.


Organizational & Execution Skills:

  • Demonstrated success managing multiple priorities and deadlines with a high level of accuracy, attention to detail, and consistency.


Leadership & Collaboration:

  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop others while fostering accountability and effective cross-functional collaboration.


Communication & Professionalism:

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in communicating complex financial information clearly and concisely to diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive financial and employee-related information.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physical Demands: Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Position requires frequent walking or standing for significant durations.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions required.
  • Lifting & Mobility: Ability to lift 20 to 40 lbs. on an occasional or routine basis.
  • Ability to reach, lift, climb, balance, stoop and crouch.
  • Sensory: Ability to talk and hear effectively.
  • Ability to see and read computer screens; detect color coding, read fine print, or standard print.
