Full Stack Engineer

The Software Industrial Complex has evolved into a bloated, expensive ecosystem that burdens enterprises with unnecessary complexity and inefficiency. Co-founded and led by Chamath Palihapitiya, we are building a Software Factory that delivers fully-managed and hosted software purpose-built for each customer.

About The Role

We seek an exceptional, full-stack software developer with high technical competency and intellectual curiosity to join our team. To succeed, you must enjoy thinking in systems and additionally possess some combination, but not all, of DevOps, data engineering, or ML/data science work experience at scale. Most engineering roles at 8090 are customer-facing, and you must have the soft skills to design and articulate well-engineered solutions to ambiguous problems.

Location

This is an on-site role based in Redwood City, California or Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Responsibilities

You will build customer solutions with Software Factory and help develop parts of our Software Factory itself. Our software engineers are responsible for the complete lifecycle of the software they create, including development, testing, operation, maintenance, and support. As a member of our technical staff, you must constantly challenge yourself on which software paradigms are evolving with advances in AI and how you can best leverage AI tools to improve your own practices and the team’s productivity. We call this building AI with AI.

Required Skills

• Expertise in and extensive professional experience with full-stack web development is a must – we use Python, Typescript, React, Data Structures, and AWS
• Owning problems end-to-end and are willing to pick up whatever knowledge you're missing fast to get the job done
• Ability to work effectively within a highly dynamic and intelligent team by maintaining the values that 8090 was founded on: engineering excellence, insatiable curiosity, a bias for action, ownership, agency, honesty, and radical candor
• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities to collaborate and convey ideas effectively internally and to customer stakeholders

• Deep expertise in data engineering, ML engineering, or data science. Examples are integrating LLMs into products, fine-tuning models, creating evaluations, or hosting AI/ML infrastructure at scale
• Professional work experience in DevOps, security, and cloud infrastructure – We use GitHub Actions, Docker, and AWS CDK extensively Pay range and compensation package

Expected compensation (US-based employees): $150,000 - $1M annual salary + stock and/or stock option awards + benefits. We offer competitive pay and benefits. Compensation may vary depending on many individualized factors, including location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Details of the compensation package, including benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401K, …), will be provided if and when a candidate receives an offer of employment.
