Job Statement

Sterling Capital Institutional Client Strategists are responsible for origination and servicing duties for institutional clients. Client Strategists operate within a highly collaborative team who are responsible for providing investment solutions directly to corporations, government, hospitals, universities/colleges, insurance, pension, non-profit, sovereign, financial institutions, and through direct calling, consultant, and other centers of influence. Relationships are obtained by offering investment solutions tailored for clients and expert product knowledge. Client Strategists manage client segments, client relationships, and their particular investment solutions expertise, constantly improving and adapting to market conditions and investor demand.


This role also includes strategic assignments and initiatives that drive client activities for the firm, requires collaborative work with senior investment team members, functional team heads, and leaders of the firm sponsoring all client related initiatives. Institutional Client Strategists are top performers who are willing to work diligently in structured and unstructured environments where initiative, productivity, creativity, energy, optimism, and intellectual curiosity are highly valued and rewarded.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute business plan to target institutional investors across hospitals, higher ed (universities/colleges), non-profit, government, insurance, pension, corporations, sovereign, financial institution verticals. While not siloed, focus will be placed on hospitals, higher ed, and NFP&G.
  • Proactively develop and maintain relationships with relevant national and regional investment Consultants
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge about the firm’s primary strategies and prompt evaluation of new strategies where appropriate
  • Jointly work with the fixed income, multi-asset, equity teams, and Head of Institutional Distribution to understand and position the firm’s investment views to gain acceptance as a thought leader and a expert of investment solutions delivered within assigned client segment verticals
  • Conduct market assessment and client needs analysis to provide appropriate solutions utilizing the full breadth and depth of Sterling Capital’s investment solutions
  • Create and maintain applicable prospect lists, conference coverage plan, marketing penetration to provide exposure and familiarity for the firm’s investment solutions expertise
  • Represent the firm with integrity and expertise in the marketplace
  • Utilize peer analysis to position the firm’s products effectively relative to competitors
  • Sponsor client on-boarding and continue to advocate for the needs of assigned clients
  • Exceed client service expectations through proactive, on-going communication and attention to client needs and requests
  • Call upon resources of the firm (people and technology) to provide valuable solutions to strengthen relationships and meet new business and client retention expectations. Key internal partners include investment management, product management, marketing, operations, legal, risk management, compliance, information technology and others
  • Jointly work with the Head of Institutional Distribution and other team members to enhance solutions materials for the hospitals, higher ed, and NFP&G [restate as: designated] client segment verticals
  • Travel domestically and internationally (as required) to develop new relationships and existing clients


Required Qualifications:

  • FINRA Series 7 or 6 and Series 63 required or must be obtained within three months from date of hire
  • BS/BA degree required
  • 10-20 years of experience in the investment management industry, with at least 5-10 years of successful business development and relationship management experience
  • Knowledgeable about a broad base of client segment investment needs, how they make investment decisions, capital formation, and legal regulatory frameworks
  • Team player who is able to work in an environment where there is knowledge sharing, reciprocity and industry contacts are leveraged for the firm’s mutual benefit
  • Able to communicate expert investment solutions
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills with proven ability to effectively communicate complex topics in a manner that creates actionable outcomes
  • Intelligent, independent thinker with maturity and good judgment; hard working and strong organizational skills
  • An interest and willingness to maintain best practices and procedures that foster world-class client origination and service
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently, including the potential for extended workdays and weekend assignments


Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA, CFA®, CAIA®
  • Established and verifiable relationships with hospitals, higher ed, NFP&G, as well as with consultants
