Position Summary
The Business Unit Manager is responsible for business results (Profit and Loss, meeting annual plan and growth in the value for a business unit). The scope of this position includes: leadership of a cross functional business unit team (sales, operations, engineering, quality), new business generation, proposal preparation, bookings (orders), Profit and Loss accountability, developing and maintaining customer relationships, establishing the yearly business plan, overseeing operating activities to ensure good customer service and cost objectives are met, contract negotiation and other duties.
This position focuses heavily on value creation. The Business Unit Manager focuses on details of value creation, i.e.; value based pricing, continual cost improvement, and identifying profitable new business opportunities. He/she guides a team of sales, engineering and manufacturing personnel to create real intrinsic value.

- Develop and execute a Business Unit strategy to achieve value creation and growth targets
- Prepare and execute a comprehensive annual business plan
- Directly manage Program Management staff and lead a multi-functional business unit team.
- Drive business unit value creation through execution of value-based pricing, productivity, and capture of profitable new business.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with customers
- Oversee all business unit contract review and negotiation activities
- Develop and present quarterly reports to executive management
- Recruits, manages, motivates and develops staff in assigned area to ensure individual and team effectiveness.
- Maintains skills matrices and identifies training needs to ensure team members are used effectively and have the necessary range of skills and competencies. Ensures positive actions are taken to encourage technical development and improved interpersonal skills.
- Leads the business unit team to optimize business performance, employee engagement and professional development
- Contributes to the departmental planning and budget process to ensure that the necessary resources are identified and approved. Budgets and oversees expenditures ensure the smooth running of department. Achieves financial objectives by analyzing variances and initiating corrective actions.
- Implements initiatives to continuously improve the responsiveness of the section/organization to customer/business needs.
- Supports and fosters the growth and professional development of all direct reports and team members.
- Develops a performance oriented work environment encompassing timely performance appraisals, reviews for new employees, and timely disciplinary or corrective actions.
- Develops a work environment that fosters open and honest communications in an effort to continuously instill confidence and credibility by actively engaging the workforce.
- Leads by example while exhibiting enthusiasm and encouraging a sense of urgency.
- Ensures effective upward and downward communication so that important information is disseminated
- Perform other duties as may be assigned
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
- 5 years’ experience which includes roles of increasing responsibility
- At least 3 years’ experience in a management or leadership role
- Ability to travel up to 30% of the time
- This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident (i.e. green card holder), political asylum or refugee.
· Technical degree preferred
· MBA from an accredited university or college is preferred
- Experience in an aerospace/defense custom manufacturing environment
· Management experience with direct reports
· Broad business knowledge preferred: sales, engineering, finance and operations
· Understanding the details of creating real value
· Critical thinking and problem solving skills
· Open and honest communication.
