The Position
Maintains and enhances the aesthetic appeal, safety, and functionality of the college campus grounds.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform regular mowing, edging, and trimming of lawns, athletic fields, and other landscaped areas.
- Plant, cultivate, and maintain flowers, shrubs, trees, and other plants across the campus.
- Maintains lawn care by seeding, fertilizing, watering, planting, spraying, collecting leaves, trimming and performing tree care.
- Monitor and operate irrigation systems to ensure proper watering of landscape elements.
- Clean road and area drains.
- Operates assigned grounds equipment and snow plows.
- Assists in snow and ice removal through use of chemicals and machinery.
- Performs the collection and disposal of refuse and trash from campus grounds, and empties outdoor trash receptacles excluding dumpsters.
- Assists in maintenance and repair of all equipment and tools assigned to the grounds crew.
- Reports to the supervisor of grounds any repairs or safety hazards which need attention.
- Work closely with the athletic department to prepare and maintain sports fields for practices and games.
- Implement pest control measures to protect plants and turf from diseases and infestations.
- Collaborate with other campus departments to coordinate groundskeeping activities for events, ceremonies, and other functions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Valid Virginia driver’s license required
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to work well with others
- Physical fitness and stamina to perform outdoor tasks in various weather conditions.
- Knowledge of plant care, irrigation systems, and grounds maintenance techniques.
- Ability to operate and maintain groundskeeping vehicles and equipment safely.
- Ability to participate in the on-call rotation, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
