The Jewish Studies Program is currently recruiting an Undergraduate Research Assistant to support a digital exhibit to accompany a faculty book, titled American Jews and the Making of the New York Opera Industry, 1880-1940 (Oxford University Press, forthcoming). Student research assistants participate in innovative research, providing an opportunity to expand their skill-set, apply practical knowledge in a research setting, and gain skills relevant to their academic and/or career pathways.
Job Description
70% Research and Data Compilation
- Collect, verify, and cite data on people, places, and events within both provided texts and historical press sources; and
- Maintain all information in an Excel Spreadsheet.
- Design a website to house a digital exhibit; and Collect images in the public domain for this purpose
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, website building, and design, as indicated in application materials.
- Interest in American Jewish culture, history, and/or musicology, as indicated in application materials.
- Familiarity with data entry, spreadsheets, use of newspaper databases, and the Chicago Manual of Style are beneficial, as indicated in application materials.
- Digital humanities familiarity, website building, and design background are all highly beneficial, as indicated in application materials.
During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
Employment Conditions
- Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
- This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
