ABOUT THE ROLE

The Director, Specialty Pharmacy will provide both strategic and operational leadership for specialty pharmacy programs across multiple locations. This individual will oversee all aspects of specialty pharmacy operations including clinical services, financial management, accreditation, regulatory compliance, staffing, workflow optimization, quality improvement initiatives, and program expansion.


This leader will collaborate closely with executive leadership, health system stakeholders, clinical teams, IT, medication access, infusion services, revenue cycle, and 340B teams to strengthen operational performance and improve patient experience.

The role is responsible for ensuring the specialty pharmacy program delivers high-quality patient care while also meeting operational, financial, and growth objectives.

• Specialty pharmacy operations and service delivery

• Program development and expansion initiatives

• Financial performance and P&L management

• Regulatory and accreditation compliance

• Staffing, training, and team leadership

• Clinical and operational workflow optimization

• Prescription capture and medication access strategies

• Limited distribution drug access and payer participation strategies

• Contract pharmacy agreements and vendor relationships

• Quality improvement and patient care initiatives

• Policy and procedure development

• Marketing and business growth initiatives


RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead the development, implementation, and execution of specialty pharmacy operational strategies

• Oversee specialty pharmacy programs across multiple sites and ensure operational consistency

• Manage pharmacy operations including staffing, workflows, compliance, budgeting, and performance metrics

• Analyze operational performance and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and patient outcomes

• Collaborate with healthcare professionals, hospital leadership, and internal stakeholders to drive program growth

• Ensure compliance with State Board of Pharmacy, CMS, FDA, and accreditation regulations

• Lead accreditation readiness and ongoing compliance efforts for URAC, ACHC, and other applicable standards

• Oversee prescription billing and reimbursement processes and serve as a resource for complex billing issues

• Support strategic discussions related to specialty pharmacy expansion, payer contracting, and limited distribution drug access

• Evaluate operating and capital needs and manage departmental budgets

• Develop and mentor pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, medication access teams, and support staff

• Lead quality improvement initiatives focused on patient care, operational excellence, and financial performance

• Maintain knowledge of evolving specialty pharmacy trends, operational changes, and regulatory updates

• Ensure appropriate drug purchasing, inventory management, and documentation processes are maintained

• Partner cross-functionally with clinical, operational, and executive teams to support organizational objectives


QUALIFICATIONS


• PharmD or BS Pharmacy from an accredited college or university

• Current active pharmacist license in the applicable state

• Minimum 3+ years of leadership or supervisory experience

• Strong operational and strategic leadership experience within specialty pharmacy or pharmacy


Operations

• Experience managing complex operational initiatives and driving process improvement

• Strong financial acumen including budget oversight and operational performance management

• Excellent communication, analytical, organizational, and relationship-building skills

• Ability to lead teams in fast-paced, high-growth healthcare environments


Preferred:

• Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field

• Experience leading specialty pharmacy sales and/or operations

• Experience managing P&L budgets and financial planning

• Experience with specialty pharmacy accreditation standards including URAC and ACHC
