Job Title: School Principal

Reports To: CEO/Superintendent or Designee ---

Position Summary

The principal serves as the instructional and operational leader of the school and is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe, supportive, and academically rigorous learning environment for all scholars. The principal provides leadership in curriculum and instruction, staff supervision, scholar support, school culture, and community engagement. The principal works collaboratively with district leadership, the district instructional coach, the reading interventionist, teachers, families, and community partners to ensure high levels of scholar achievement and continuous school improvement. When serving in a theme-based school, the principal is also responsible for strengthening, expanding, and aligning the school's theme-based programming to enhance scholar learning experiences and opportunities. The principal also supports district efforts to increase scholar enrollment by promoting the school's programs, engaging families, and participating in recruitment initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Leadership

  • Lead the implementation of high-quality, standards-aligned instruction across all subject areas.
  • Monitor classroom instruction through walkthroughs and formal observations to ensure effective teaching practices.
  • Use scholar performance data to guide instructional decisions and support improved academic outcomes.
  • Support the development and implementation of school improvement plans aligned with district goals.
  • Collaborate with the district instructional coach and reading interventionist to strengthen instructional practices, support teacher development, and implement targeted literacy and academic interventions for scholars.
  • Ensure the effective use of instructional strategies that promote scholar engagement and achievement.

Staff Supervision and Professional Development

  • Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate teachers and support staff.
  • Provide regular feedback and coaching to staff to improve instructional practice.
  • Plan and facilitate professional development aligned with school and district priorities, including opportunities coordinated with the district instructional coach.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement among staff.

School Culture and Climate

  • Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive, and respectful school environment.
  • Implement systems that support positive scholar behavior and strong relationships.
  • Address scholar discipline issues in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Promote scholar leadership, engagement, and character development.

Scholar Support and Achievement

  • Ensure all scholars receive appropriate academic and behavioral support.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of intervention programs and support services, including literacy interventions supported by the reading interventionist.
  • Collaborate with special education staff, social worker, interventionist, and support teams to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of scholars.
  • Promote programs that support the social-emotional development of scholars.

Theme-Based School Development (if applicable)

  • Lead efforts to strengthen and expand the school's theme-based focus (e.g., STEM or performing arts).
  • Collaborate with district leadership, staff, and community partners to develop innovative opportunities aligned with the school's theme.
  • Ensure the theme-based programming is integrated into classroom instruction, enrichment opportunities, and extracurricular activities.
  • Monitor the impact of theme-based initiatives on scholar engagement and academic outcomes.

School Operations and Management

  • Oversee daily school operations including scheduling, staffing, and resource allocation.
  • Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal regulations.
  • Manage the school budget and allocate resources effectively.
  • Maintain a safe and secure learning environment.

Family and Community Engagement

  • Foster strong partnerships with families and the community.
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding school programs, expectations, and scholar progress.
  • Attend and actively participate in Jumoke Academy Parent Association (JAPA) meetings to provide updates on school initiatives, academic progress, and upcoming events.
  • Encourage family participation in school events and decision-making processes.
  • Build partnerships with community organizations to support scholar learning and theme-based programming.

Enrollment and Recruitment

  • Support district efforts to increase scholar enrollment through active engagement in recruitment and outreach activities.
  • Promote the school's academic programs, theme-based opportunities, and extracurricular offerings to prospective families.
  • Participate in enrollment events, school tours, community outreach, and marketing initiatives to highlight the school's strengths.
  • Collaborate with district staff to monitor enrollment trends and implement strategies to attract and retain scholars.

Data Accountability

  • Analyze scholar achievement data and other school performance indicators.
  • Monitor progress toward academic and operational goals.
  • Lead staff in using data to inform instructional improvements and targeted interventions.
  • Ensure accurate reporting of required school and district data.

District Leadership and Governance

  • Participate in district leadership meetings and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with district departments and instructional support staff to support school improvement efforts.
  • Attend Board of Directors meetings monthly and when applicable present updates on school performance, initiatives, and progress toward district goals.
  • Implement district policies and initiatives with fidelity.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the CEO/Superintendent or designee to support the mission and goals of the district.

Qualifications

  • Connecticut State 092 Certification
  • An accredited Bachelor's; Master's degree; 6th Year
  • Minimum of six years of successful teaching experience at the elementary and/or middle school level, preferably in more than one grade level.
  • Demonstrated experience in instructional leadership or school administration.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

Work Schedule And Compensation

This is a full-time, 12-month position. Salary is commensurate with experience and district guidelines. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
