Overview:
The Sr. Cloud FinOps Expert is a hands-on individual contributor responsible for optimizing cloud costs, improving financial visibility, and enabling data-driven decision-making across cloud environments. This role bridges engineering and finance by translating cloud usage into actionable financial insights and ensuring efficient, accountable cloud consumption.
The position focuses on executing FinOps practices, building analytics, and supporting governance frameworks while collaborating closely with engineering, finance, and business teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute cloud cost optimization initiatives, including right-sizing, workload scheduling, and eliminating unused resources
- Manage and optimize Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, and committed use discounts
- Analyze cloud usage to identify inefficiencies and recommend actionable cost-saving measures
- Translate cloud consumption into financial insights, aligning spend with business KPIs and cost centers
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and cost planning activities for cloud environments
- Partner with engineering and finance teams to improve cost transparency and accountability
- Analytics, Reporting & Insights
- Build and maintain dashboards and reporting solutions to track cloud spend, trends, and anomalies
- Analyze and report on unit economics (e.g., cost per workload, user, or transaction)
- Provide regular insights and recommendations to improve cost efficiency and resource utilization
- Implement and maintain tagging strategies and cost allocation models
- Support enforcement of governance policies and financial controls to prevent overspending
- Contribute to defining and improving FinOps processes, standards, and documentation
- Utilize and enhance cloud cost management tools and native billing platforms
- Support automation of cost tracking, alerts, and reporting workflows
- Collaborate with DevOps teams to integrate cost controls into CI/CD and deployment processes
- Support analysis of cloud pricing models and consumption patterns
- Contribute to optimization of pricing models and discount programs through data-driven insights
- Work closely with engineering teams to promote cost-aware design and development practices
- Provide guidance and knowledge sharing on FinOps principles and tools
- Support a culture of shared responsibility for cloud cost management.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus
- Preferred to have professional certificates such as: FinOps Certified Practitioner, Cloud certifications (AWS, Azure, or GCP), or equivalent
- Basic project management exposure is a plus
Experience:
- 10–14 years of experience across cloud engineering, financial analysis, or FinOps roles
- Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP), with multi-cloud exposure preferred
- Proven experience in cloud cost analysis, optimization, and reporting
- Experience working with cross-functional teams (engineering, finance, operations)
Skills & Competencies:
- Cloud cost optimization and financial analysis
- Strong understanding of cloud pricing and billing models
- Data analysis, reporting, and dashboarding
- Cost allocation and tagging strategies
- Experience with cloud cost management tools and billing platforms
- Proficiency in Excel and/or BI tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau)
- Basic scripting or automation knowledge is a plus
