Contract Type: FTC – 24 Months (36 Hours per week)

About The Role

As a Trainee Project Support Officer, you’ll play a key role in supporting the delivery of projects within the Children’s Services Commissioning and Programmes Team. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your skills in project management, research and stakeholder engagement within a local government environment.

You’ll contribute to a wide range of project activities – from researching and analysing data to producing reports and supporting programme tracking. You’ll also assist with coordinating meetings, engaging with internal teams and external partners, as well as maintaining key project documentation.

Working alongside experienced programme and project professionals, you’ll gain hands-on exposure to how large-scale public sector programmes are delivered. You’ll also help ensure projects meet deadlines, support consultation activities, and contribute to improving outcomes for children and young people.

About The Team

The Children’s Services Commissioning and Programmes Team leads on designing, delivering, and improving services that support children, young people, and families. The team works collaboratively across the council and with external partners including other local authorities, service providers, and government bodies.

It’s a fast-paced, supportive environment focused on innovation, evidence-based decision making, and continuous improvement. The team plays a crucial role in shaping services, responding to local needs and delivering transformation programmes that make a real difference in the community.

About You

We’re looking for someone who is curious, organised and eager to build a career in project support and public service. You’ll enjoy working in a collaborative environment, be confident communicating with a range of stakeholders and have a genuine interest in improving outcomes for children and young people.

You don’t need to have extensive experience – what matters most is your willingness to learn, your attention to detail and your ability to manage tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Criteria

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly
  • An interest in research and data analysis, with confidence in interpreting findings
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines
  • Comfortable using IT systems, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders at different levels
  • A proactive attitude with a willingness to learn and develop new skills
  • An understanding of (or interest in) local government and public services
  • Ability to plan and manage your own workload to a high standard
  • Flexible and adaptable, able to respond to changing priorities
