Company Description

Client company is a payroll and staffing services company building and maintaining 25+ internal and client-facing applications for the staffing industry. We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our software development team through a period of meaningful growth and modernization.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll own team structure, delivery quality, and SDLC maturity while working closely with Product and IT to drive faster, more reliable software releases. The team has deep institutional knowledge and strong business expertise; they need a leader who can introduce modern engineering practices, build capacity, and reduce the team’s reactive support burden and create capacity for planned engineering work.

What You'll Do

• Lead and grow a team of 5-10 software engineers across .NET, SQL Server, Angular, and API development

• Own the engineering delivery process; sprint planning, release quality, incident management, and retrospectives

• Build and hire toward a target team structure that includes QA, DevOps, and security engineering capabilities

• Establish clear ownership and accountability for system reliability, delivery and modernization efforts

• Reduce the team's reactive work burden (currently ~80% bugs/L2 support) by investing in test coverage, CI/CD, and better production observability

• Partner with the Product Development Manager to balance new platform development (the Essentials suite) against legacy maintenance commitments

• Establish code review practices, automated testing standards, and deployment automation

• Define and execute a plan to reduce key-person risk across the team

• Collaborate with IT leadership on infrastructure improvements, dev/QA environment quality, and the Azure migration roadmap

• Partner closely with a dedicated DevOps Engineer to establish CI/CD, environment stability, and deployment automation

What We're Looking For

• 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with 2+ years in a team lead or engineering management role

• Hands-on background in .NET / C# and SQL Server environments

• Experience modernizing SDLC practices in teams transitioning from manual to automated delivery

• Track record of hiring and growing engineering teams

• Comfortable working in a legacy codebase while building toward a modern platform

• Strong communication skills; bridge between engineering, product, operations, and executive leadership

• Bonus: experience with CI/CD implementation (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions), Angular, payroll/financial services domain

Why This Role

• Greenfield opportunity to shape engineering culture and practice at a company with real domain complexity

• Stable, profitable business with long-tenured institutional knowledge on the team

• Direct influence on platform strategy, hiring, tooling, and architecture decisions

• Collaborative team with strong product management support
