Backend Engineer – Digital Enterprise (HR & Finance)
At Stegra, we are building a next-generation steel plant - and digital capabilities are a core part of how we operate, optimize, and scale our operations.
We believe the best digital solutions are created close to the business, by teams who understand both the context and the technology. Our teams work cross-functionally to build solutions that are scalable, maintainable, and create real value.
We are now looking for a Backend Engineer to join our Digital Domain supporting HR and Finance.
What You’ll Do

Your day-to-day work will include:
- Developing and maintain backend services that enable reliable HR and Finance operations
- Designing APIs and integrations that enable reliable and scalable communication between systems
- Working with both synchronous and asynchronous patterns, including event-driven approaches where relevant
- Contributing to how services are structured, interact, and evolve over time
- Collaborating with HR and Finance stakeholders to understand needs and turn them into working solutions
- Breaking down problems into clear technical components and development tasks
- Ensuring that security, data protection, and access control are embedded in the solutions we build
- Modular, microservice-based architecture
- Combination of well-designed APIs and event-driven integrations
- Integration treated as a core capability
- Systems designed to evolve and be replaceable over time
- Iterative development - delivering early and improving continuously
What You’ll Bring
- A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience
- A few years of experience in backend development
- Experience working with APIs and/or microservice-based systems
- Interest in how systems are designed and how components interact over time
- Familiarity with asynchronous patterns (events, messaging, queues)
- Ability to break down complex problems into structured technical solutions
- Comfortable working directly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Interest in understanding business processes and how digital solutions support them
- Experience with Kotlin / Spring or similar
- Experience with cloud, DevOps practices, or CI/CD
- Experience working with testing, monitoring, or production systems

This is Stegra
Stegra is on a mission to change the global steel industry by producing green hydrogen, iron, and steel - with the goal of eliminating CO₂ emissions. Instead of coal, we use green hydrogen and fossil-free electricity, meaning our primary emissions will be water and heat.
By 2030, our ambition is to produce 5 million tonnes of green steel annually in our fully integrated, digitized, and sustainable plant in Boden, Northern Sweden - currently under construction. But this is just the beginning. Our expertise in green hydrogen will enable us to decarbonize industries beyond steel, paving the way for a cleaner future.
Our Stockholm Office
Our modern Stockholm office is located on Norra Stationsgatan, close to Karolinska University Hospital in central Stockholm. Here, you’ll find a bright, collaborative workspace where cross-functional teams connect, share ideas, and drive progress. Whether you're visiting regularly or working hybrid, you'll be part of a vibrant office culture with easy access to the city’s energy and amenities.
Founded in 2020, Stegra (formerly H2 Green Steel) was created with the purpose to decarbonize hard-to-abate industry. Construction of our first project – an integrated plant producing green hydrogen, green iron and green steel – is well underway in Boden, Sweden. Slashing emissions using green hydrogen and renewable electricity, we’re starting a clean industrial revolution. Steel is just the beginning.
We are building a diverse and rapidly growing team spread across our site and offices in Boden and Stockholm, targeting close to 1500 employees by the end of 2025. Together, we focus on delivering green impact – for our people, customers, investors, society and planet.
