Company Description

Blank Slate is building the next generation of systems to help teams move faster, think better, and operate at scale. We create intuitive, high-impact products, leveraging data science, cognitive science, and a strong user interface, that solve real problems for modern organizations. Our team values ownership, curiosity, and speed - bringing together engineers and builders who are excited to tackle complex challenges and turn ideas into reality.

Role Description

We’re looking for a Full Stack Engineer who can own our product end-to-end: from the data pipeline and adaptive algorithms on the backend to the learner and manager experiences on the frontend. This is a hands-on building role, and you have the opportunity to contribute to architecture and features day to day.

With that, this role has a clear leadership trajectory. We’re looking for someone with the technical depth to build what we need today and the strategic instinct to lead an engineering organization tomorrow. You’ll have a seat at the table for product and business decisions from day one.

What You’ll Own

Platform & Product

  • Full stack development of our adaptive learning platform, including the learner-facing application, manager dashboards, and admin tooling.
  • Optimization and Implementation of multiple ML engines and databases facing increasing volume across regions.
  • SSO integrations, data export pipelines (flat file and API), and LMS interoperability for enterprise clients managing compliance workflows.
  • Content delivery systems (deck sequencing, certification pathways, completion tracking) that power the core learning experience.

Architecture & Scale

  • Making infrastructure decisions that set us up for the next 3–5 years: cloud architecture, CI/CD, monitoring, database design, and security posture.
  • Evaluating build vs. buy tradeoffs, selecting tools and frameworks, and establishing engineering standards as the team grows around you.
  • Supporting enterprise deployment requirements including on-premises AI models, data residency constraints, and SOC 2 / HIPAA compliance readiness.
  • Work with a fast-moving engineering team to rethink AI implementation pipelines
  • Strong collaboration and consideration with cybersecurity

What We’re Looking For

  • 7+ years of professional full stack engineering experience, with depth in at least one modern backend language and one modern frontend framework.
  • You’ve built and shipped production SaaS products—not just features within them. You understand the full lifecycle: database design, API architecture, deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
  • Strong opinions on how to build reliable, maintainable systems. You care about code quality not for its own sake, but because it’s how small teams move fast without breaking things.
  • Experience with data-intensive applications: working with event streams, building analytics pipelines, or integrating ML models into production systems.
  • Comfort with enterprise requirements: SSO/SAML, role-based access control, audit logging, data export, and compliance frameworks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication. You’ll interface directly with the business, enterprise clients, and research partners.

Strong Signals

  • Direct Experience working with Scala or Java, SQL/noSQL databases, evaluation of AI-generated code
  • You’ve been the first or second engineer at a startup, or the tech lead of a small team where you were responsible for both building and deciding what to build.
  • Experience in data science or machine learning, even if it’s not your primary role—enough to evaluate model validity, design experiments, and collaborate meaningfully with ML researchers.
  • Prior experience deploying on-premises or self-hosted solutions for enterprise clients with strict data residency or security requirements.
  • You’ve operated in industries where software failures have real-world consequences: aviation, healthcare, energy, financial services, or defense.
  • You think about technology as a business lever. You ask “why are we building this” before “how should we build this.”

What We Offer

  • Direct access to the CEO and a real voice in product and business strategy, not only technical execution.
  • The rare combination of mission-driven work and hard technical problems: you’re building algorithms that change how people retain critical safety knowledge.
  • Competitive salary, flexible remote work (NYC preferred), and the opportunity to build an engineering culture from the ground up.
