As a Senior Accountant, you will be responsible for providing input and coordination of budget preparation, financial reporting, business analysis and internal controls as well as providing financial support to the Calgary Police Service (CPS). Primary duties include:

  • Ensure the integrity, timeliness and accuracy in the compilation, preparation, reconciliation, analysis and consolidation of financial information. This includes involvement to month end, periodic and year end reporting and procedures.
  • Involvement in internal and external audit requirements throughout the year.
  • Participate in weekly and monthly meetings with various civilian managers and sworn senior officers from all departments within CPS to advise, consult and assist with operational decisions and potential outcomes.
  • Analyze actual operational expenditures along with budgets, variances, trends and projections.
  • Provide end-to-end guidance in terms of policies, processes and connection to financial outcomes for projects.
  • Conduct monthly and quarterly revenue reporting for court fines and externally funded projects as well as the financial management of inventories.
  • Review and develop quality assurance for integrity of reports, processes and internal CPS controls, including the oversight of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Qualifications

  • An accounting diploma from a post secondary institution, having a minimum of 13 courses recognized by the CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) program.
  • Further pursuance to obtain an undergraduate degree in fulfillment of enrollment and completion of the CPA designation program is ideal. Preference will be given to candidates who are in pursuance of this path.
  • A minimum of 3 years financial experience preferably in a large organization involved with budgeting, variance analysis, along with monthly and year end reporting.
  • Knowledge of current accounting standards (GAAP, PSAS) is essential.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) is required.
  • Experience with Peoplesoft (FSCM and HCM) is considered an asset.
  • Understanding of The City's procurement process and regulations is preferred.

  • An enhanced security clearance and a credit bureau check will be conducted.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications. Education obtained from out of country must have or be able to obtain, an Education Credential Assessment (ECA) for confirmation of equivalent credentials.

Position Type: 1 Temporary (up to 18 months)

Compensation: Pay Grade 9 $41.49 - 55.51 per hour

Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.

Days of work: This position works a 5 day work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.

Location: 5111 47 Street N.E.
