What You’ll Do
You’ll be at the center of commercial development in Allen County:
- Conduct inspections on commercial construction projects, including new builds, remodels, and renovations
- Ensure compliance with local and state building codes
- Work closely with contractors, architects, and property owners to explain requirements and resolve violations
- Investigate complaints and address structural and safety concerns
- Document inspections, prepare detailed reports, and track compliance
- Perform follow-up inspections to confirm corrective actions
- Interpret and apply building codes across multiple disciplines (structural, electrical, plumbing, etc.)
- High School Diploma or GED
- 8+ years of experience in commercial construction (concrete, roofing, siding, drywall, or related fields)
- Valid Allen County Contractor License, Inspector Certification, or equivalent
- Working knowledge of structural, electrical, plumbing, and safety codes
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction plans
- Strong communication skills—you can work effectively with contractors and design professionals
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office and reporting tools)
- Basic math and measurement skills
- Valid Driver’s License
- You understand the complexity of commercial construction projects
- You can confidently navigate conversations with contractors and design teams
- You bring a practical, solutions-focused approach to code enforcement
- You’re detail-oriented but able to see the big picture
- Inspections at active commercial construction sites in all weather conditions
- Exposure to large-scale projects and complex builds
- Physical activity including climbing, bending, lifting, and navigating uneven terrain
- Detailed reporting and documentation responsibilities
- On-call availability for two weeks per year
