The Prince George’s County Department of The Environment is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Property Attendant grade A04 position, in the Sustainable Waste Management Division/Disposal Section.

About The Position

This is routine work in safeguarding buildings and equipment against damage, loss and vandalism. Some judgment and discretion is involved in dealing with emergencies that may arise and in reporting irregularities to proper authorities. General supervision is received from a superior to whom difficult situations may be referred.

About The Agency

The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division); collecting, processing and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities and householders (Resource Recovery Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas and emission (Sustainability Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division).

Examples of Work

  • Provides continuous security surveillance of landfill property to prevent unauthorized access and illegal activity
  • Contacts emergency services (Fire, Police, EMS) during emergencies or critical incidents
  • Maintains ongoing surveillance of leachate storage and control systems to ensure security and proper site conditions
  • Monitors landfill gas flare and control facilities for safety and operational compliance concerns
  • Ensures all buildings, equipment, and vehicles are properly secured during after operational hours
  • Open and secures access gates at facility opening and closing in accordance with established procedures
  • Conducts routine patrols of landfill grounds to deter trespassing, vandalism, and illegal dumping
  • Maintains assigned vehicles in clean and serviceable condition and reports maintenance or mechanical issues promptly to supervisor
  • Documents daily activities, observations, and incidents in written or electronic logs as required
  • Works assigned shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as needed

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of six (6) school grades with some experience as a watchman or security guard.

Any equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in security operations, law enforcement, or related public safety field
  • Experience working in an industrial environment such as a landfill, construction site, or utilities operation
  • Familiarity with access control systems, gatehouse operations, or traffic monitoring procedures
  • Experience preparing written reports, incident logs, or daily activity records
  • Knowledge of occupational safety practices and OSHA-related standards
  • Ability to effectively handle and de-escalate difficult interactions with the public or contractors
  • Basic computer skills for data entry, reporting, and communication systems
