JOB SUMMARY:

The Teaching Assistant is a seasonal position which serves as a key member of the Beacon College-offered summer programs. The Teaching Assistant works in close collaboration with course instructors to support the delivery of educational programming across workshops, academic courses, and college/independent living seminars. This role involves direct engagement with students to observe and assess skill development both inside and outside of the classroom, contributing to intervention planning and program evaluation efforts. The Teaching Assistant reports directly to the Course Instructor and works under the indirect supervision of the Academic Coordinator, Associate Director of Summer Programs, and other designated program administrators.

DUTIES AND TASKS:

  • Assist course instructors with the delivery of educational programming, including workshops, academic courses, and college and independent living skill seminar courses;
  • Support the planning and supervision of evening and weekend on and off campus activities and excursions for students; including participation in off-campus trips each weekend, with additional coverage as program needs require;
  • Providing supervision to ensure a safe learning and living environment;
  • Design and facilitate a student club or organization based on student interest serving as the club or organization ‘advisor’;
  • Support the planning and facilitation of opening day activities and other program events as assigned;
  • Communicate any student-related issues to the Resident Director or Course Instructor
  • Collect, document and maintain student data on a daily basis or as directed to support end-of-program evaluations efforts;
  • Attend and actively contribute to mandatory staff training sessions and all other assigned staff meetings, gaining familiarity with program policies, instructional expectations, and student support strategies;
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of all program policies, expectations, and procedures, and model professional conduct throughout the duration of the program; and
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by program leadership to support the overall success and integrity of the summer programs.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of instructional support practices and academic program environments
  • Foundational knowledge of learning differences, neurodiversity, and varied learning styles, with an understanding of how these may impact academic and social development
  • Knowledge of confidentiality, privacy, and ethical standards when working with student information.
  • Knowledge of college transition skills and independent living competencies

Skills:

  • Problem‑solving with the ability to identify student needs or concerns and communicate them appropriately to supervisors
  • Strong observation and documentation skills, with attention to detail when collecting and recording student data and program information.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff in person, on the phone, and over e-mail.
  • Exceptional time and organizational skills with a systematic approach to managing tasks and priorities.

Abilities:

  • Ability to support instructional activities, including workshops, seminars, and academic courses, under the direction of course instructors.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and patient approach when working with students, parents, and other Beacon College community members.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong ability to remain composed and maintain a clear focus during high-stress situations.
  • Ability to follow structured schedules, policies, and procedures consistently.
