Position Summary

Spicer Group is seeking a highly talented Architect II to support the continued growth of our Development & Buildings Service Line by initiating and managing architectural projects from programming and conceptual design through construction completion. This role serves as an architectural project manager—developing client relationships, preparing proposals, establishing and managing budgets and project metrics, and leading design reviews and stakeholder coordination. The Architect II produces high-quality designs and construction documents (drawings, specifications, and reports), develops cost opinions and bid-ready contract documents, and collaborates with engineers, contractors, and other partners to meet scope, schedule, and quality expectations. The position also provides technical expertise related to building types, materials, and codes; integrates sustainable design principles; conducts site visits to monitor construction progress; and supports senior staff by helping to oversee and delegate work while continuing to develop as an architectural/A&E subject matter expert.

Responsibilities

  • Supports senior architectural staff and practice lead with the development and growth of Spicer Group’s Development and Buildings Service Line
  • Supports senior staff with the development and growth of Spicer Group’s architectural department
  • Initiates new projects, drafts proposals, collaborates with existing and prospective clients, and supervises projects from the programming phase through construction project completion
  • Serves as architectural project manager and manages clients and projects
  • Communicate with clients to understand their needs and preferences, and present design proposals for approval
  • Develops client relationships and new project leads and participates in company promotional activities
  • Establishes and manages project budgets, reviews invoices, and monitor project metrics
  • Conducts design reviews at project milestones. Meets with key stakeholders during those reviews to gather their input
  • Collaborates with engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure project requirements and timelines are met
  • Provides specialized technical assistance in connection with particular building types, components, materials, elements, or building codes
  • Develops architectural designs from conceptual stages through to detailed construction documents
  • Prepares and manages architectural documentation, including drawings, specifications, and reports
  • Helps senior staff to oversee and delegate work to architectural and engineering staff
  • Adheres to project schedules and provides high-level design oversight and production
  • Prepares Preliminary Opinion of Cost (POC) documents at various stages of the design and present them to the client for review and adjust the design as necessary to meet the client’s budget
  • Develops construction specifications and contract documents for bidding
  • Ensures all designs comply with relevant building codes, regulations, and standards
  • Integrates sustainable design principles into architectural projects to promote energy efficiency and environmental responsibility
  • Produces feasibility and or environmental impact studies, assist in site selection by reviewing ordinances, evaluating environmental impact, and where applicable, social impact
  • Conducts site visits to monitor the progress of construction and ensure the quality of workmanship and materials
  • Shall further develop skills to become an architectural and A&E subject matter expert (SME)

Physical presence is an essential function of this role. Occasional travel and attendance at evening meetings may be required. The omission of a specific duty or responsibility does not preclude assigning duties not listed herein if such duties and responsibilities are a reasonable assignment to the position.

Position Requirements

  • Completed bachelor’s degree in architecture
  • Proven architectural experience
  • Current professional architectural licensure, preferably in Michigan
  • Self-motivation and drive for continuous improvement and support for others
  • Skilled in architectural design software (AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe creative suite, Lumion, and Blue Beam Revue
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to think critically and provide creative solutions to complex design challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in architecture
  • Experience with sustainable design and LEED accreditation
  • Experience in a specific architectural niche (e.g., residential, commercial, healthcare)
  • Familiarity with building information modeling (BIM) technology
