Role Overview:

The Category Buyer is responsible for supporting both the Canada business, and the US Hard Rock division. Their primary accountabilities will be for steel, steel components, mining-related direct materials and consumables, and as selected indirect categories. This role is significant in both the commercial and operational interface between procurement, operations, and suppliers. They are responsible for securing supply of critical mining inputs, negotiating competitive cost structures, and aligning with regional procurement strategies.


This role supports both the Canada and US business, with approximately a 75% to 25% split, respectively.


Required / Key Accountabilities:

Direct and Indirect Spend

  • Lead sourcing and commercial management of steel, steel components, and mining-critical materials
  • Develop and execute category strategies aligned to market indices (CRU, AMM, scrap, etc.)
  • Drive cost competitiveness through negotiations, should-costing, and supplier benchmarking
  • Ensure security of supply across volatile steel markets through dual sourcing strategies and long-term supplier agreements
  • Provide clear visibility on cost drivers, inflation exposure, and savings pipelines
  • Support budgeting and forecasting cycles with data-driven insights


Operational Procurement:

  • Ensure timely and accurate conversion of PRs to POs
  • Maintain high data integrity in ERP systems
  • Ensure compliance with procurement policies and approval processes
  • Act as a reliable partner to operations, ensuring uninterrupted supply.
  • Support cost-saving initiatives and continuous improvement projects.


Supplier Management:

  • Build and manage a robust supplier base for steel and mining-related categories
  • Conduct regular supplier performance reviews (cost, quality, delivery, service)
  • Drive supplier accountability and continuous improvement
  • Identify and onboard new suppliers to mitigate risk and improve competitiveness.


Data Analytics:

  • Perform advanced data analysis using Excel (pivot tables, lookups) to support cost modeling, spend analysis, and supplier performance tracking.
  • Develop and maintain procurement dashboards to monitor steel indices (CRU, AMM, scrap), pricing trends, and MRO usage patterns.
  • Prepare monthly procurement reports and KPI updates for leadership.


Critical Experience and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Engineering, Supply Chain Management or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in procurement, including direct and indirect categories.
  • Proficient in data analysis and advanced Excel (Power Query, pivot tables)
  • Experience with an ERP system is an asset.
  • Experience in steel sourcing in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Strong negotiation, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple categories and project simultaneously.
  • Excellent decision-making and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to work in a global, fast-paced environment.

Ability to sit for long periods of time.

Position Type: Full-time hybrid (3 days a week in office)

Salary Range: CAD$80,000-$100,000 annually
