Position Overview
The Corporate Accountant is responsible for responsible for day-to-day corporate accounting activities and preparing and analyzing month-end statements for all assigned companies. The Corporate Accountant will be exposed to a variety of industries including but not limited to construction, Residential and Commercial property management, architecture, and agriculture, and will work on a team that includes Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Property Accountant, and Project Accountant. The Corporate Accountant is responsible for year-end consolidated statements for the enterprise.
Primary Responsibilities
Accounting Operations:
- Prepare and post various monthly journal entries (amortization, accruals, etc) for all assigned companies
- Monthly review of sub-ledgers and entries made by Accounts payable and Accounts Receivable teams
- Intercompany reconciliation with the Property Accountant and the Project Accountant for all entities
- File HST for all assigned companies and respond to CRA audits of corporate tax and HST accounts
- Prepare monthly working papers and report on P&L and budge-to-actual results to support management decision-making
- Prepare consolidated working papers for each fiscal quarter and year-end
- Work with external accountants to ensure the annual audit is completed efficiently
- Work with external tax advisors to ensure annual tax filings are completed efficiently
- Assist in preparation of annual corporate budgets and periodic forecasts to support risk management efforts and organizational scalability
- Work with the Controller to evaluate current processes and suggest improvements to maximize team efficiency
- Cross-training for property management and development companies to gain a general understanding
- Key member of special projects team.
- Other Tasks / Assignments if required.
- Post-Secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA designation completed or in progress is an asset (not required)
- Working knowledge of ASPE financial reporting
- Hands‑on month‑end close experience, including journal entries (accruals, amortization, reclasses) and supporting schedules and reconciliations
- Strong balance sheet ownership and account reconciliation discipline
- Experience in multi‑entity environments with intercompany transactions and reconciliations
- Exposure to external audits and tax filings (coordination with external accountants/tax advisors)
- Experience preparing and filing HST returns and responding to CRA inquiries/audits
- Proficiency with Excel (pivot tables, lookups, structured worksheets); overall strong systems literacy
- Experience with Yardi or similar ERP/accounting systems is an asset
- Ability to analyze budget‑to‑actual variances, identify anomalies, and propose corrective actions
- Able to translate financial information into clear, actionable insights for non‑finance stakeholders
- Able to adapt and change priorities at a moment’s notice in fast-paced environment
- Strong attention to detail with a control mindset and high accuracy
- Organized and efficient with strong time management and prioritization in a fast‑paced, changing environment
- Demonstrates ownership, accountability, and initiative across assigned areas
