Job Summary
Operate, maintain, and test the Training Simulator in accordance with ANSI 3.5, Nuclear Power Plant Simulators for Use in Operator Training and Examination.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for the coordination of maintenance, simulator software models, and testing to improve performance and resolve differences between the reference plant and the simulator (software specialist).
- Maintain real-time software models of nuclear power plant electrical, reactor and secondary control, thermal heat balance, and fluid process systems, using custom software packages.
- Monitor and track simulator deficiencies.
- Identify and resolve simulator problems; troubleshoot simulator software and hardware problems; identify causes; acquire spare parts and supplies; perform work; test repairs to ensure success.
- Produce simulator performance metrics for management oversight.
- Develop work packages and work plans to resolve simulator deficiencies.
- Develop test plans and supporting documentation to ensure simulator performance adheres to industry standards and federal guidelines.
- Interface with simulator instructional staff to ensure fidelity and performance are maintained.
- Support station business initiatives, refueling outages, Emergency Planning (EP) duties, and other projects.
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution in computer science, physics, information technology, engineering, applied science or related technical degree. Without a degree, a successful candidate must have nine or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of advanced technical education and experience which includes power plant operations, electrical, programming, electronics, simulation modeling, and/or digital controls.
- Four or more years of experience as a nuclear simulator software specialist or six years in a technical nuclear field: Instrument and Control (I&C) technician and Operations.
- Training or experience in thermal power plant basics and nuclear power plant systems operations.
- Previous or current SRO license or SRO Certification (preferred) with nuclear power plant simulator industry experience.
- Ability to operate, maintain, upgrade, and test a full scope reference plant nuclear simulator.
- Ability, as necessary, to work off-normal hours to meet simulator maintenance and testing requirements in support of training schedule.
- Ability to work independently to identify/troubleshoot/resolve simulator software issues, including the development and implementation of testing schedules, program diagnostic activities, and apply software patches.
- Good interpersonal skills, effective writing and verbal communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to instruct.
- Proficiency in FORTRAN computer programming language and a working knowledge of the Windows operating system desired.
- Additional proficiency in C++, Visual Basic, JavaScript, and Microsoft Office applications and experience with software programming is a plus.
