Chief of Staff
Indexed description
THE THESIS
Napoleon pioneered the modern corps system and the general staff model, with Marshal Berthier as its chief architect and operator. Berthier’s job was not to fight. It was to translate strategic intent into operational orders, coordinate across corps spread over hundreds of miles, and keep the machine synchronized. The general staff beneath him handled the grunt work: couriers carried messages, secretaries maintained orders of battle, adjutants tracked unit positions, quartermasters managed supply chains. After Napoleon destroyed the Prussian army at Jena in 1806, the rest of Europe spent a decade copying his system. Every modern corporation still runs on a version of it.
AI agents now do what the couriers, secretaries, adjutants, and quartermasters did. They route information, draft documents, track status, maintain context across workstreams, and execute routine coordination. What they do not replace is the Berthier role itself: the person who understands the commander’s intent, exercises judgment about what matters, and drives operational reality across a complex organization. That role is more important than ever when you have a whole force of AI agents at your disposal. Someone has to direct them.
If you’ve read Dorsey and Botha’s “From Hierarchy to Intelligence,” you know the argument: hierarchy is an information routing protocol, and AI is replacing it. We agree with the diagnosis. This role is our answer. We’re not cutting headcount and calling it innovation. We’re building a new kind of operational architecture from the ground up, inside a company scaling bleeding-edge GPU infrastructure as an NVIDIA Preferred Partner across 40+ global data centers.
THE ROLE
This is not a traditional chief of staff position. It is modeled on what Berthier was to Napoleon: the person who translates strategic intent into operational reality, who ensures that the right information reaches the right decision at the right time, and who can be trusted to carry a message to Garcia. Take an objective, figure out the path, deliver the result. No one needs to fully specify the problem for you in advance.
The scope will change daily. Some days you’ll be building financial models for board-level decisions. Other days you’ll be structuring an engineering roadmap, preparing materials for an NVIDIA partnership review, managing a contract negotiation, or standing up a data pipeline. The common thread is that every task matters, the CTO cannot do it alone, and you will have the best AI tooling available to do the work of a team by yourself.
You will sit between executive decision-making and organizational execution across engineering, product, corporate strategy, legal, and finance. You will have direct exposure to, and participation in, every part of scaling a venture-backed GPU infrastructure company.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operational Execution. Own cross-functional projects from initiation to completion. Prepare board materials, investor presentations, strategic memos, and policy documents. Track and drive execution across engineering, product, and business initiatives.
- Strategic Analysis. Build financial models, competitive analyses, and market assessments. Turn complex technical and business information into clear decision frameworks for the CTO and executive team.
- Engineering & Product Support. Participate in engineering and product planning. Help structure roadmaps, manage technical documentation, and coordinate across teams. Be credible in both engineering and business conversations.
- Data & Intelligence. Stand up and maintain data workflows, dashboards, and analytical infrastructure. Use AI agents aggressively to automate operational tasks, accelerate research, and multiply the CTO’s output.
- Communications & External Affairs. Draft and refine external communications, thought leadership, regulatory comments, and partnership materials. Serve as a proxy for the CTO in meetings and correspondence where appropriate.
- Corporate Operations. Support contract review, compensation analysis, hiring processes, corporate governance, and ad hoc projects that fall outside established functional ownership.
- Scheduling & Logistics. Manage the CTO’s calendar, travel, and meeting preparation. Ensure the CTO’s time is allocated against the highest-priority work at all times.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- 5-8 years of professional experience in investment banking (technology or infrastructure coverage), technical product management, or an operationally intensive role at a high-growth technology company.
- Exceptional organizational ability. You are the person others describe as “the most organized person I’ve ever worked with.” Systems over heroics. Logistics over tactics.
- Strong analytical skills. You can build financial models, work through messy data, and turn ambiguous problems into concrete plans with clear next steps.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication. You produce board-quality documents, not rough drafts.
- Fluency with modern AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Copilot, or equivalent). You already use AI agents daily and understand their capabilities and limitations. You will be expected to lead with these tools, not learn them on the job.
- High adaptability and comfort with radical context-switching. You can move between a GPU export licensing analysis and a recruiting pipeline review in the same afternoon without losing quality or momentum.
- Self-directed execution. Given an objective and minimal guidance, you determine the path and deliver. You do not wait for instructions to be fully specified.
Preferred
- Exposure to data center infrastructure, cloud computing, GPU/HPC, or AI infrastructure markets.
- Experience with data engineering, SQL, Python, or business intelligence tooling.
- Background in corporate strategy, venture capital, or private equity.
- Familiarity with government affairs, export controls, or regulatory environments.
- Previous startup experience or demonstrated entrepreneurial initiative.
