Engineering Manager

Company Context (read carefully)
We design and build self-contained structures on mobile platforms (trailers or vehicle-based units).
These are not standard vehicles or buildings. Each unit integrates:
- mechanical structure
- electrical power systems (12V / 24V / 120V / 240V)
- HVAC (in many cases)
- Generator
- layout, weight distribution, and transport constraints
Think: a building + power system + vehicle platform combined into one deployable unit
What This Role Owns
- Full system-level integration (mechanical + electrical + layout)
- Translating client requirements into buildable, real-world designs
- Working directly with fabrication/shop teams
- Making practical engineering tradeoffs (space, weight, power, cost)
- Ensuring designs function reliably in the field
Candidates MUST:
- Have personally owned system integration on a complex physical product)
- Understand real-world constraints (vibration, transport, serviceability)
- Have experience across multiple systems (not siloed):
- electrical (power distribution, low/high voltage)
- mechanical layout / packaging
- ideally HVAC and/or plumbing integration
- Have taken projects from concept → build → real-world use
PLUS:
- Have worked on mobile, transportable, or modular building systems (nice to have)
Relevant Backgrounds (Target Profiles)
We are intentionally targeting candidates from adjacent industries:
1. Specialty Vehicles / Mobile Platforms (Primary)
- RV / camper / overland vehicle design
- Emergency / ambulance / command vehicles
- Truck upfitting / specialty trailers
Example companies:
- Farber Specialty Vehicles
- Similar specialty vehicle manufacturers
2. Modular / Prefabricated Construction (Strong Secondary)
- Transportable or prefab buildings
- Remote camps / mobile offices / site trailers
- Engineers who have owned integrated building systems
Example companies:
- Modular Building Institute
- ATCO Structures
- NRB Modular Solutions
3. Touring / Mobile Infrastructure (Adjacency)
- Live event / touring systems
- Mobile staging, power, or deployment systems
Example organizations:
- Cirque du Soleil
- PRG (Production Resource Group)
- TAIT Towers
What This Person Is NOT
Do NOT submit candidates who are:
- Pure CAD designers or drafters
- Entry-level or academic engineers
- Residential construction professionals without systems integration
- General contractors or project managers without hands-on technical ownership
- Engineers who have never seen their work built and used in the field
Seniority
- Mid to senior (typically 5–15+ years relevant experience)
- Must have operated with autonomy and ownership
Search Instructions
- Focus on passive candidates (currently employed)
- Direct outreach via LinkedIn is expected
- Prioritize quality over quantity (3–5 strong candidates > 20 weak ones)
- Target individuals who have built real systems, not just designed components
Required Screening Questions
Do not submit candidates without clear answers:
- What mobile, modular, or transportable systems have you personally designed and integrated?
- What electrical systems have you worked with (voltage, components, complexity)?
- Have your designs been built and used in real-world conditions? Examples?
- What tradeoffs have you made involving space, power, weight, or cost?
- Have you worked directly with fabrication or field teams? In what capacity?
Process Expectations
- We will move quickly on qualified candidates
- Open to relocation or contract-to-hire
- First strong candidate may receive an expedited offer
Definition of Success
A candidate who can:
- take ownership of system-level decisions within weeks
- prevent design and integration failures
- operate independently in a fast-moving, real-world build environment
Important:
If candidates do not clearly demonstrate system integration experience on mobile or transportable platforms, they are not a fit.
