Qualifications
Medical terminology preferred Computer data entry skills preferred Phlebotomy experience required/certification preferred Previous Laboratory experience required BLS certification Core Competencies Acts as a resource and provides training and education for phlebotomy and specimen collection techniques according to established protocols, procedures, and standards of Laboratory practice. Acts as a resource and provides training and education for waived laboratory testing according to established protocols, procedures, and standards of Laboratory Science practice. Acts as a resource for management of patient orders. Acts as a resource and provides training and education for specimen processing and handling according to established protocols, procedures, and standards of Laboratory practice. Assists with assessment of competency for all areas of practice. Applies patient safety standards and patient management methods to Laboratory practice. Practices the ethics of the profession. Job
Responsibilities
Demonstrates proficiency in training phlebotomy collection techniques and patient management, including venipuncture, capillary puncture, and as applies, arterial puncture and therapeutic phlebotomy, as required. Demonstrates proficiency in training patient preparation and specimen collection techniques for throat culture, urine, and other requested specimens. Demonstrates proficiency in training waived level testing for immunology, urinalysis, chemistry, and hematology (as applies). Demonstrates proficiency in documenting patient specimen flow in Laboratory Information System (LIS). Demonstrates proficiency in training specimen processing and handling according to requirements, including preparation of specimens for dispatch to external labs as needed. Assists with development of tools for assessment of competency for all areas of practice. Assists in maintaining inventory for all necessary supplies. Assists in monitoring and ensuring completion of required periodic tasks within the Laboratory. Develops staff schedule and weekend/holiday rotation. Maintains a safe work environment and complies with standards for safe practice and standard precautions. Performs other duties as requested.
