Director of Engineering - Automation & Controls


The Director of Automation & Controls leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of automation systems to support safe, reliable, and efficient operations. This role oversees a multidisciplinary engineering team to deliver scalable, high-performing industrial systems that enhance productivity, quality, and operational consistency.

This position is also closely involved in day-to-day plant support-driving troubleshooting efforts, implementing solutions, and maintaining and optimizing control systems. Strong collaboration with operations and plant teams is essential.

In addition, the Director plays a key role in both greenfield and brownfield initiatives, providing automation expertise during plant design, expansion, and upgrade projects.


What You'll Do

Leadership & Strategy

  • Define and execute the automation roadmap in line with business objectives
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of automation, network, and electrical engineers
  • Establish engineering standards and drive a culture of continuous improvement and innovation

Automation & Control Systems

  • Oversee design, development, and commissioning of PLC, HMI, SCADA, and DCS systems
  • Standardize platforms, architectures, and documentation across sites
  • Lead modernization initiatives, including Industry 4.0 and IoT integration
  • Support capital projects from concept through commissioning

Operations & Reliability

  • Ensure high availability and performance of automation systems in production environments
  • Partner with plant teams to troubleshoot and resolve system issues
  • Implement preventive maintenance strategies and manage equipment lifecycle/obsolescence

OT Network & Cybersecurity

  • Maintain reliability and performance of industrial networks
  • Ensure alignment with cybersecurity standards and best practices
  • Lead risk assessments for industrial control systems

Project Management

  • Manage multiple automation initiatives, ensuring delivery on time and within budget
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams and oversee external vendors

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure automation systems meet all regulatory and safety requirements
  • Support EHS programs to promote safe operation of automated equipment


What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Control Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Automation, or a related field
  • 10+ years of experience in automation within manufacturing or industrial environments
  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing engineering teams
  • Experience working within Paper or Wood manufacturing a plus
  • Strong background in PLCs (Rockwell, Siemens), HMIs, SCADA, and industrial control systems
  • Experience with industrial networking protocols (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus)
  • Hands-on experience with electrical systems, troubleshooting, and instrumentation
  • Understanding of OT cybersecurity principles
  • Exposure to robotics, digital transformation, and advanced manufacturing technologies
  • Strong project management and organizational skill
