Founding Engineer

Sargasso Capital Management is a New York-based constructivist hedge fund. We take concentrated positions in small and mid-cap public companies and engage management to close the gap between AI ambition and AI implementation. 58% of public companies claim an AI strategy. Fewer than 1% describe deployment as mature. That gap is our thesis. We pair a proprietary AI Maturity Index with a six-step deployment playbook to move portfolio companies from pilot to production.

Role Description

We are hiring our first engineer. The role is full-time, on-site in New York, reporting to the CIO.

You will build the tooling that powers our research and engagement work. That includes the data infrastructure behind our AI Maturity Index, the screening pipeline that surfaces portfolio candidates, internal tools that compound the firm's research throughput, and prototypes we bring into conversations with management teams and boards.

This is a founding technical hire. You will own the stack end to end and shape what we build next.

Qualifications

• 5 to 10 years of engineering experience, ideally at mission-driven technology companies known for technical rigor, high ownership, and shipping hard infrastructure in demanding domains such as defense, aerospace, fintech, or large-scale data platforms.
• Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering from a strong undergraduate or graduate program.
• Fluent in Python. Comfortable shipping production code, not just notebooks.
• Hands-on experience with LLM integration, retrieval systems, and evaluation.
• Comfortable building data pipelines and APIs across messy, unstructured sources.
• Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure on AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Genuine interest in public equity markets and how an investment firm operates.
• Bias toward owning problems end to end.
