Overview

Seeking a highly skilled Contract Systems Engineer to provide hybrid (initial full-time + ongoing ad hoc) infrastructure support. This role is designed to create operational redundancy for the existing Systems Engineer and ensure business continuity during planned PTO, emergencies, and critical project work.

The engagement will begin with a full-time onboarding and knowledge transfer period (1–3 months), followed by a transition into an on-demand, per diem support model.

Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure & Systems Support

  • Administer and support core infrastructure components, including:
  • Dell VxRail / VMware environments
  • Active Directory and NTFS permissions
  • Office 365 / M365 cloud services
  • Sophos firewalls and routers
  • Site-to-site VPN connectivity
  • Maintain system uptime, performance, and reliability across production environments
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve infrastructure and connectivity issues

Virtualization & Platform Management

  • Provision and manage virtual machines for internal projects and production workloads
  • Support database servers and API infrastructure from a systems and connectivity standpoint
  • Ensure proper resource allocation, scaling, and system availability

Operational Continuity & Backup Coverage

  • Act as a backup Systems Engineer, providing coverage during:
  • PTO and planned absences
  • Emergency situations and outages
  • High-demand operational periods
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation and environment familiarity to ensure seamless coverage

Incident Response & Escalation Support

  • Respond to critical incidents with urgency, meeting defined SLAs
  • Troubleshoot outages affecting infrastructure, connectivity, and production workflows
  • Support disaster recovery and remediation efforts
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners for resolution

Environment Familiarization & Documentation

  • Quickly learn the clients environment during onboarding phase
  • Document system architecture, procedures, and troubleshooting processes
  • Maintain readiness for rapid re-engagement in ad hoc support scenarios

Engagement Model

  • Phase 1: Full-time engagement (1–3 months) for onboarding, knowledge transfer, and environment immersion
  • Phase 2: Transition to ad hoc, on-call/per diem support
  • Flexible engagement aligned to business needs, including planned and emergency coverage

Service Level Expectations (SLAs)

  • Ability to respond to critical incidents within minutes to hours
  • Availability for after-hours or 24/7 support as needed
  • Strong sense of urgency in high-impact downtime scenarios
  • Participation in defined escalation and communication protocols

Required Qualifications

Technical Expertise

  • Strong hands-on experience with:
  • VMware / VxRail infrastructure
  • Active Directory & Windows Server administration
  • Office 365 / Microsoft 365 cloud platforms
  • Network infrastructure (VPNs, firewalls, routing)
  • Experience with Sophos networking solutions (preferred)
  • Solid understanding of infrastructure supporting:
  • Database servers
  • API-driven environments

Operational Skills

  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues quickly
  • Experience supporting production environments with uptime requirements
  • Ability to work independently in high-pressure situations

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to rapidly learn and adapt to new environments
  • Dependable, responsive, and service-oriented mindset

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting hybrid cloud environments
  • Familiarity with disaster recovery planning and execution
  • Prior experience in ad hoc / contract-based infrastructure support roles
  • Exposure to environments requiring strict uptime SLAs

Additional Notes

  • This role does not require software development or coding
  • Focus is on infrastructure reliability, connectivity, and operational stability
  • Separate engagement may exist for security incident response (IR) coverage
