Position Summary
The Director of Operations oversees the day-to-day operations of a high-volume residential homebuilding division. This individual will work across construction, purchasing, scheduling, customer experience, trade relations, and operational process improvement to ensure homes are delivered on time, within budget, and to company quality standards.
The ideal candidate is a proven production homebuilding leader with experience managing large-scale operations producing 300+ homes annually within a production environment. This role requires a strong operational mindset, leadership presence, financial acumen, and the ability to build accountability across multiple departments and field teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership across construction, purchasing, scheduling, warranty, and field operations.
- Drive operational efficiency, cycle time reduction, cost control, quality improvement, and customer satisfaction initiatives.
- Oversee the successful delivery of 300+ homes annually while maintaining budget and quality expectations.
- Partner closely with executive leadership on forecasting, growth planning, staffing, and operational scalability.
- Establish and monitor KPIs related to starts, closings, cycle times, backlog management, trade performance, and homeowner satisfaction.
- Lead, mentor, and develop construction managers, operational leaders, and support staff.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, vendors, municipalities, and internal stakeholders.
- Identify operational bottlenecks and implement process improvements to support scalable growth.
- Ensure compliance with all company policies, safety standards, and local/state building regulations.
- Collaborate with land, development, sales, and finance teams to align operational execution with company objectives.
- Support recruiting, retention, and succession planning efforts within the operations organization.
- Participate in budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning initiatives.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience within production homebuilding operations.
- Prior leadership experience overseeing operations producing 300+ homes annually required.
- Proven background with a large production homebuilder or high-volume private/regional builder.
- Strong understanding of residential construction operations, purchasing, scheduling, warranty, and customer service.
- Demonstrated success leading large teams in fast-paced, growth-oriented environments.
- Experience managing budgets, operational metrics, and profitability initiatives.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to drive accountability while fostering a collaborative team culture.
- Proficiency with homebuilding ERP/project management systems preferred (BuildPro, Mark Systems, Hyphen, etc.).
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent industry experience considered.
Preferred Background
- Experience in production, move-up, or semi-custom residential homebuilding environments.
- Background scaling operational teams during periods of rapid growth.
- Experience working within privately held homebuilding organizations preferred.
- Strong trade/vendor network and operational process development experience.
