Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for ensuring that the financial support systems which serve the General Synod and its designated legal corporate entities such as General Synod Council (GSC), Board of Benefits Services (BOBS), and Church Growth Fund (CGF), function effectively in accordance with established financial policies and in compliance with legal and fiduciary requirements. The CFO is responsible for the strategic financial management of these assets, and will provide RCA governing bodies and their staff with timely, accurate, and adequate financial information, which shall inform current decisions and, to the highest degree possible, provide a rational basis for long range planning.

Responsibilities And Essential Duties

Strategic Leadership and Representation (30%)

  • Represent the Reformed Church in America as its Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer in designated matters.
  • Serve as a member of the Strategic Leadership Team and fulfill additional duties as assigned.
  • Serve as the Treasurer for the GSC, CGF, BOBS and MFCA Boards.
  • Serve as a member of the Audit and Risk Management Committee, Investment Advisory Committee and committees that would be identified by the GSC.

Departmental Management and Reporting (20%)

  • Lead, manage and hold accountable this position’s direct reports, ensuring staff are motivated, well-trained, and equipped for excellence.
  • Provide accurate, timely reports to governing bodies (GSC, BOBS, CGF, and General Synod) with clear interpretation for non-financial experts.

Financial Planning and Oversight (30%)

  • Provide essential financial information and guidance to the General Secretary, Strategic Leadership Team, and budget managers for strategic planning.
  • Oversee the RCA’s investment funds, including evaluating performance, developing Investment Policy Statements, and selecting fund managers, with input from the investment advisory committee.
  • Maintain banking and investment relationships, manage investment and endowment fund records, and oversee assessment revenue collections.

Policy and Compliance (10%)

  • Develop, review, and monitor financial policies to ensure strong internal controls and compliance.
  • Oversee the RCA’s audit process, and assist the Director of Finance and Facilities in addressing audit findings, in collaboration with the audit and risk management committee.

Contractual and Administrative Responsibilities (10%)

  • Maintain relationships with organizations contracting with the RCA, oversee accounting services for contracted entities, and execute contracts over $25,000 as GSC’s designated representative.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

  • Commitment to the mission and vision of the RCA.
  • Master’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • Ability to travel 15-20 days per year.
  • Ten plus years in a senior financial managerial position.
  • Results-oriented, strategic thinker and planner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Desired Qualifications

  • Professional accounting designation (CA, CMA or CPA).

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Grade: 21

Reports to: General Secretary

Hiring Salary Range: $130,000 – 150,000
