Contract - 12 Months - Up to 48 hours Bi-weekly

Under the direction of the Manager, Customer Experience & Partnerships, the Library Assistant 1 assists the Circulation Services Department of the Newmarket Public Library in providing prompt courteous service including to ensure materials are organized and accessible, , ensure materials borrowed are returned to the library and that the library is compensated for replacement costs, maintain privacy of patron’s files, to present a positive image of the library to the public, and maintain harmonious relations with staff and the public.

Job Requirements

  • Formal academic education or courses at a secondary school graduate level in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of word processing applications such as Microsoft Word.
  • Experience in a public library environment is an asset.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and customer service skills to interact with a diverse client.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment, such as photocopier, and telephone reception system.
  • Ability to lift and carry library materials and equipment up to 50 lbs approximately and to push and pull full book trucks which may involved bending and reaching.
  • Knowledge of cash handling procedures.
  • Ability to work as a team member and independently.
  • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
