Assistant Accountant
Assistant Accountant opportunity reporting into the Senior Accountant.
This is a hands‑on role within the Financial Control team, offering the opportunity to support month‑end close, compliance, and reporting processes, while developing technical skills and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
We are looking for a candidate with practical accounting experience, ideally from a commercial or corporate finance environment. This role is well suited to an Assistant Accountant who is developing their financial control experience and is comfortable supporting core accounting and reporting activities. It offers an opportunity to build skills, gain exposure across a broad finance remit, and work collaboratively within a supportive team environment.
What are my accountabilities?
- Assist in monthly Balance Sheet reviews and detailed P&L analysis, resolving anomalies and ensuring accuracy
- Support month‑end processing, including the preparation and posting of journals for prepayments, accruals, WIP, contractor costs, and intercompany transactions, under guidance from senior team members.
- Prepare and post key journals in line with accounting standards and internal controls
- Assist in timely financial reports delivery and dashboards (P&L, DSO, KPI metrics) to support decision-making
- Perform balance sheet reconciliations and reviews, ensuring accuracy and completeness, and escalating discrepancies to senior finance team members while developing strong analytical skills and attention to detail
- Assist in quarter-end and year-end close, support the external audit process, and contribute to the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements
- Assist with tax obligations, including GST, FBT and income tax returns, while keeping up to date with relevant legislation
- Manage ABS surveys on a quarterly basis, ensuring accurate and complete financial data is provided
- Collaborate with shared services to ensure accurate and efficient month-end close and reporting
- CPA/CA qualified or currently progressing
- Practical accounting experience through an assistant accountant position, preferably in a commercial setting
- Exposure to financial control responsibilities, including month-end close and intercompany accounting
- Practical experience in month‑end processing, supported by a sound understanding of accounting principles
- Experience supporting detailed P&L and balance sheet reviews, with a high level of attention to detail
- Intermediate Excel skills (Power Query Preferred)
- Basic understanding of statutory accounting and tax compliance, with the ability to support related activities and learn under guidance.
- Experience across month-end, quarter-end, and annual reporting cycles
- High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Capability to investigate routine financial anomalies and assist in resolving them, with support from senior colleagues when required
- Strong communication skills to coordinate effectively with business units and shared services
- Ability to support the maintenance and documentation of financial controls, with an interest in contributing to continuous improvement.
