Summary Of Position
Ensures the city's vehicles and equipment are maintained in good working condition. Involves repairing and maintaining mechanical and automotive equipment.
Examples Of Work
Essential Duties*
- Performs tune-ups, oil changes, battery checks, tire and lubrication checks, and other preventive maintenance on city automotive and mechanical equipment;
- Test drives vehicles and equipment;
- Diagnoses engine and mechanical problems using a diagnostic scanner;
- Assists in maintaining detailed vehicle maintenance records;
- Repairs clutches and brakes on city vehicles and equipment;
- Removes engines and transmissions for repair;
- General knowledge of removal and repair of rear axle assemblies, gears or replacement.
- General knowledge of large equipment to include diesel engine repair and maintenance.
- May be subject to after hour calls;
May perform some welding work and acetylene cutting;
May operate other city vehicles as well as equipment (pick-up and delivery);
May attend educational seminars; and
Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Thorough knowledge of: auto mechanics and the operation and repair of small and heavy equipment. General knowledge of: all automotive repair (water pumps, alternators, power steering pumps, air brakes etc.) and removal and repair of rear ends;
Physical Ability to: lift and maneuver up to 80 lbs. (i.e. battery, bucket, etc.) and ascend and descend 30" high steps numerous times per day.
Ability to: operate heavy equipment (pick-up and delivery); repair hydraulic systems, engines, and heavy equipment; read wiring diagrams; diagnose minor mechanical problems as well as repair vehicles; work with a variety of hand and power tools; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers and other departments' personnel; and maintain Texas driver's license (applicable to job responsibilities) and good driving record.
Acceptable Experience And Training
High school graduation, or its equivalent, plus training as a mechanic, and at least four years of experience in automotive repair;
or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certificates And Licenses Required
State of Texas Class B (commercial) driver's license (obtainable within one year).
