The Director of Open Innovation acts as a key connector between internal R&D, commercial teams, and external technology partners to unlock new capabilities and advance scientific platforms. Operating in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment, this position shapes how emerging technologies, IP, and strategic collaborations are sourced, evaluated, and integrated into the organization’s broader innovation agenda. With a strong focus on value creation and scientific relevance, the role requires both strategic vision and hands-on deal leadership. Accountabilities:
- Lead the end-to-end lifecycle of strategic partnerships, including opportunity identification, evaluation, structuring, negotiation, and execution of collaboration, licensing, and technology access agreements.
- Serve as the primary deal lead, aligning internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure successful execution of strategic initiatives.
- Assess partnership opportunities based on technical feasibility, strategic alignment, and commercial value creation.
- Negotiate complex deal terms, including licensing structures, exclusivity agreements, milestones, and financial arrangements.
- Manage active partnerships post-execution, ensuring delivery against defined objectives, governance structures, and performance expectations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams across R&D, strategy, and product development to integrate external innovations into business priorities.
- Support the development and execution of the broader open innovation strategy in alignment with enterprise goals.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 10+ years of experience in strategic partnerships, business development, or licensing within life sciences, biotechnology, diagnostics, or related industries.
- Proven track record of negotiating complex, high-value partnership and licensing agreements.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional deal teams in matrixed environments without direct authority.
- Strong commercial acumen with the ability to evaluate strategic and financial impact of external collaborations.
- Excellent executive communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Willingness to travel 25–30% domestically, with occasional international travel.
- Advanced degree (MBA, MS, or PhD) and experience in IP-based partnerships or joint development models strongly preferred.
- Prior exposure to R&D or product development environments is a plus.
- Competitive annual salary range of $150,000–$200,000.
