Database Architect

This role is a senior technical leadership position responsible for defining and evolving enterprise-scale database architecture across a complex cloud-based platform. You will act as the primary subject matter expert for database systems, ensuring reliability, performance, scalability, and operational excellence across a large distributed environment. Working closely with infrastructure and engineering teams, you will shape standards, drive automation, and improve database observability and governance at scale. The position blends hands-on technical depth with strategic influence, as you guide architectural decisions, mentor teams, and help establish best practices across the organization. You will play a key role in identifying risks, closing performance gaps, and ensuring database systems support high-availability SaaS services. This is a high-impact role where your expertise directly influences system stability, engineering efficiency, and product reliability.

Accountabilities

You will lead the design, governance, and continuous improvement of database systems across a large-scale enterprise SaaS environment. Your work will focus on ensuring performance, reliability, scalability, and operational readiness across both relational and NoSQL data platforms.

• Assess overall database health, readiness, and architectural needs across the organization
• Identify risks, gaps, and performance bottlenecks in existing database systems
• Define and drive tactical and strategic improvements for database platforms and engineering teams
• Lead initiatives in capacity planning, monitoring, alerting, tuning, and performance optimization
• Oversee schema design, query optimization, sharding strategies, and migration planning
• Improve reliability through deadlock resolution, load optimization, and replication management
• Establish and promote database best practices, standards, and operational health models
• Implement observability and automation using cloud-native and industry-standard tools
• Build and lead a cross-functional council of database experts and champions
• Provide consulting support to engineering teams and assist in critical production incidents when needed
• Curate and deliver training initiatives to improve database knowledge across engineering teams

Requirements

This role requires deep expertise in database architecture at scale, particularly within cloud-native SaaS environments, along with strong leadership and communication skills to influence engineering decisions across teams.

• 8+ years of experience in database architecture for large-scale enterprise SaaS platforms
• 8+ years of hands-on experience with PostgreSQL in production environments
• 5+ years of experience working with cloud data technologies (e.g., AWS or equivalent platforms)
• 5+ years of experience with NoSQL and distributed database architectures
• Strong knowledge of performance tuning, query optimization, and database scalability patterns
• Experience with database observability, monitoring, and automation frameworks
• Proven ability to define and enforce architectural standards across multiple teams
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills in distributed engineering environments
• Preferred mindset: proactive problem-solver with strong ownership and bias for action
• Ability to work independently across complex systems and influence without direct authority
